Summer at Woodstock – Beginner Violin Masterclass

Welcome to the Beginner Violin Masterclass, a comprehensive and immersive journey into the world of the violin. This hands-on course is designed for participants with little to no prior experience, aiming to introduce basic violin playing techniques, note-reading skills, and the joy of creating music through the exploration of three carefully selected musical pieces.

This masterclass is designed to provide a solid foundation for beginners, fostering a love for the violin and a lifelong appreciation for the art of music. So, this course is suitable for anyone looking forward to learning the queen of instruments violin.

 

Course Structure:

 

Day I: Introduction to Violin

  • Posture: Understanding the correct way to hold the violin and the bow.
  • Basic sound production: Exploring the fundamentals of creating a clear and beautiful tone.
  • Different parts of the violin: Familiarizing participants with the anatomy of the instrument.
  • Note Literacy: Introduction to basic musical notes.
  • Practice Session: Hands-on practice to reinforce posture.

 

Day II: Building Foundations

  • Posture Correction: Refining and perfecting the proper violin and bow-holding techniques.
  • Introduction of first, second, and third fingers: Learning basic finger positions on the violin.
  • Using full bow/fluency of the bow: Developing the ability to play with the entire bow.
  • Note Literacy: Identifying notes and their names on the musical staff.
  • Practice Session: Applying newly learned techniques through guided exercises.

 

Day III: Aural Skills and Scotland’s Burning

  • Aural Skills: Developing the ability to listen and reproduce musical sounds.
  • Scotland’s Burning: Introducing a musical piece to practice and apply the learned skills.
  • Note Literacy: Drawing clef signs and whole notes on the musical staff.
  • Practice Session: Focusing on aural skills and applying note literacy to the chosen piece.

 

Day IV: Completing Scotland’s Burning and Note Values

  • Completing the Scotland’s Burning song: Mastering the selected piece.
  • Note Values: Understanding different types of musical notes.
  • Practice Session: Reinforcing note values through practical exercises.

 

Day V: Scotland’s Burning Repetition and Note Value Test

  • Scotland’s Burning repetition: Further refining and perfecting the performance.
  • Note Value Test: Assessing understanding and application of note values.
  • Practice Session: Revisiting note values through targeted exercises.

 

Day VI: Frere Jacques and Note Transcription

  • Frere Jacques: Introducing a new musical piece.
  • Note Transcription using staff notation of Scotland’s Burning: Transcribing the learned piece to sheet music.
  • Practice Session: Applying note transcription skills to Frere Jacques.

 

Day VII: Completing Frere Jacques and Rest Values

  • Completing Frere Jacques: Mastering the new piece.
  • Rest Values: Understanding different types of rests in music.
  • Rest Value Test: Assessing understanding and application of rest values.
  • Practice Session: Focusing on rest values through practical exercises.

 

Day VIII-IX: Twinkle-Twinkle Song and Rhythm Variation

  • Twinkle-Twinkle Song on Violin: Introducing a new musical piece.
  • Rhythm Variation: Exploring variations in rhythm within the selected piece.
  • Practice Session: Applying rhythm variations to Twinkle-Twinkle.

 

Day X: Rehearsals and Conclusion

  • Rehearsals: Bring together the learned pieces – Scotland’s Burning, Frere Jacques, and Twinkle-Twinkle – for a comprehensive musical performance.
  • Conclusion: Reflecting on the journey, celebrating achievements, and looking forward to continued musical exploration.

Faculty

Kushmita Biswakarma, Woodstock School

 

Kushmita has completed her Diploma and master’s degree in music performance from the prestigious University of Music and Theatre Munich (Germany) and Music University Nuremberg (Germany). At this moment, she is working as a Violin and Viola teacher and conducts the Beginning Strings and the Junior Orchestra at Woodstock School, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand.

 

Kushmita has toured Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Italy as a Solo Violinist with the “Sound of the Earth” orchestra. She has worked with renowned Orchestras such as Hofer Symphoniker (Germany), Landestheater Coburg (Germany), Symphony Orchestra of the Music University Nuremberg (Germany), Bavarian Orchestra Academy (Germany), Young Franco-German Philharmonic Bayreuth (Germany), and Symphony Orchestra of India (India).

 

In India, she has performed with Indian classical artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Rakesh Chaurasia, Sabir Khan and various musicians of Bollywood such as Ajay Atul, Salim Sulaiman, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Suresh Wadkar, Usha Uthup, Anuradha Paudwal, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Monali Thakur, Sachin Jigar, Ranjit Barot and many others. She has also performed with various bands such as Laboum (Germany) and Indus Creed (India).  She was featured in the semi-final of Indian Idol Season Ten (2018) as an accompanist to the top five contestants. She has also performed as a member of the Indo-Western fusion band Perfect Amalgamation as a solo violinist.  She has worked with the Hollywood music Producer, singer singer-songwriter Josh Groban and Kelli O’Hara for the virtual concert event Vax India Now hosted by CNN to raise awareness of India’s ongoing COVID-19 vaccine shortage.
