Summer at Woodstock – Indian Music Exploration

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of Indian classical music. Participants will learn and explore various melody and rhythm instruments and have the opportunity to develop their vocal skills in the Indian classical tradition. The course begins with an introduction to Indian classical music appreciation, including the two main components of classical music: Raag (melody) and Taal (rhythm). Students will learn to perform simple compositions and explore extended sections of compositions set to different taals.

 

Who should take this course?

 

Indian Music Appreciation is for absolute beginners who want to learn about and participate in Indian music, as well as for students who already have some knowledge and would like to improve their skills. All instruments will be provided by the school, so you just need to bring yourself!

 

Through this course, participants will:

 

  • Gain an understanding of Indian classical music appreciation, including the elements of Raag (melody) and Taal (rhythm).
  • Develop basic skills in playing a variety of classical melody and rhythm instruments, such as sitar, santoor, Indian classical guitar, harmonium, Indian classical violin, tabla, and voice.
  • Learn to perform simple compositions and explore extended sections of compositions set to different taals
  • Acquire knowledge of the Indian taal system, its function, and its role in accompanying other instruments during solo and duet performances.
  • Gain insights into how Indian classical music is performed in concerts, both as a solo artist and in duet performances.
  • Develop a deeper appreciation and love for the art form of Indian classical music.
  • Experience personal growth and cultural enrichment through immersion in the traditions and practices of Indian classical music.

Faculty

Aloke Maiti, Indian Music Teacher, Woodstock School

Mr. Maiti has been a music teacher at Woodstock for 18 years and has traveled extensively as an Indian musician for 21 years. Along with performing the Sitar at concerts in the US, Europe and throughout India, Mr. Maiti has given lecture demonstrations on Indian classical music in universities and colleges around the world.

 

Mr. Maiti has a master’s in music in Sitar from the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkota and the Sangeet Visharad from Bhatkhande Music College in Lucknow. He plays six different string and drum instruments of Hindustani classical music and has been an examiner of Indian classical music at Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Prayagraj for 8 years and at Pracheen kala Kendra, Chandigarh for 6 years.
