Summer at Woodstock – Math Beyond the Classroom

“Mathematics Beyond the Classroom” is a two-week immersive program designed for students in grades 6 to 8 (ages 10-14) who have a passion for exploring mathematics on a deeper level. This course delves into foundational mathematical topics like number systems, algebra, and coordinate geometry, etc while introducing exciting, unconventional areas. Set in the scenic surroundings of Woodstock School, Mussoorie, students will engage with math both in the classroom and through the natural environment. Outdoor explorations will connect math to the world around them, sparking curiosity and creativity. The program culminates in a unique hands-on project wherein students, working in teams, design and build a board game based on the mathematical concepts they’ve learned. The course is perfect for students eager to explore the historical and practical significance of math while sharpening their problem-solving, collaboration, and critical-thinking skills.

Course Objective:

Participants will develop a deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts such as number systems, algebra, and geometry, while being introduced to exciting, lesser-known topics like fractals and hexadecimal systems. They will hone critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they apply math to real-world scenarios in nature. Collaboration will be fostered through the team-based board game project, where students will practice creativity, communication, and logical thinking. Additionally, the outdoor explorations will help students see the interconnectedness of math and nature, enriching their appreciation for both subjects. By the end of the program, they will have gained confidence in their mathematical abilities and learned to approach problems with curiosity and creativity.

Week 1: Foundational Concepts & Exploration
Foundations of Thought: Delving into the Core of Mathematical Ideas through Nature and Logic

This week, students will dive into fundamental mathematical concepts and explore how they manifest in the natural world. From number systems to fractals, we’ll uncover the beauty and order that math brings to nature’s chaos, using hands-on activities and outdoor learning.

Week 2: Creative Applications & Game Design
From Theory to Creation: Designing the Ultimate Math Adventure

As the course progresses, students will apply their newfound knowledge to the creative challenge of designing a math-based board game. This week blends probability, strategy, and design-thinking, culminating in a collaborative project that brings math to life in an exciting and interactive way.
