On Wednesday, Grade 6 students put on a special show for the Grade 5 class. The performance, which featured the students’ own compositions, is the culmination of weeks of work. Since the start of the school year they’ve been honing their skills in rhythm using the djembe (African drum), wood block, tambourine and other percussion instruments. Students composed and performed their own arrangements in small groups, coming together for a grand finale in which the whole class played as one.
“Rhythm is at the heart of all music, and this sort of exercise is a strong foundation for students, whatever instrument they go on to specialise in,” says music teacher Mrs Webb. “For the younger students, seeing the progression that the class above have made in an extra year is a powerful advertisement for practice and perseverance.”
