Course Description

This specialty course is open for anyone with a love of music who wants to explore improvisation in a mix of styles. This is especially for those who already have skills in at least one musical instrument. In this unique approach to music, students will learn how to improvise through a variety of Western and Indian styles with the guidance of two expert Woodstock musicians. Students will learn alongside our expert, highly accomplished teachers who have developed their own unique style using this approach.

Students who choose this course will develop skills of adaptation and application as they learn to move in different musical grooves and apply their knowledge of one music to another.

Faculty 1

Milan, Music Teacher, Woodstock School

Born in 1975 in Belgrade, Serbia, Mr. Milan started playing piano at the age of 7 and later finished Music School ” Stankovic”, Belgrade , in jazz piano. His professional playing career started in 1994 with classical and jazz performances before joining local pop/rock bands until 2004. Mr. Milan worked as a professional pianist/keyboard player for the Zak Smith Band in New York from 2005-2009 then joined NTW Productions in Amsterdam from 2010-2014, playing at Chamonix, Val Thorens and Val d-Isere. From 2015-2019 he worked for Helse GMBH, Zurich as a pianist before joining Woodstock school in February 2022 as a piano teacher.

Aloke Maiti, Indian Music Teacher, Woodstock School

Mr. Maiti has been a music teacher at Woodstock for 17 years and has traveled extensively as an Indian musician for 20 years. Along with performing the Sitar at concerts in the US, Europe and throughout India, Mr. Maiti has given lecture demonstrations on Indian classical music in universities and colleges around the world.

Mr. Maiti has a master’s in music in Sitar from the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkota and the Sangeet Visharad from Bhatkhande Music College in Lucknow. He plays six different string and drum instruments of Hindustani classical music and has been an examiner of Indian classical music at Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Prayagraj for 8 years and at Pracheen kala Kendra, Chandigarh for 6 years.
