Earlier this week students from our DOST team (Development Outreach Student Team) had their first trip this school year to Dunda village, as part of Woodstock’s community engagement programme. They sat down with the residents and gave their project proposals. Each project was approved by the community which means we can now proceed with our plans.

  • At the beginning of every semester each student team sits down with the community we will be working with to discuss our ideas and their requests. This was our first meeting with the Dunda residents where each student leader presented their project. The community agreed to each of them.
  • Pictured is Aseem (left), the student leader for the Litre of Light Project, with a boy from Dunda who volunteered to show us around the village and inside the houses. He told us that for him solar powered lights would be of great help, as when he walks home at night there are snakes on the path which could bite him. The lights would protect him from injury and make him feel safer.

  • Exploring the new primary school, which Woodstock built last year, for the first time this year.
  • The 2013 cloud burst caused the area’s irrigation system to be destroyed. For many of the villagers of Dunda this was disastrous for their livelihoods. Woodstock fundraised and employed villagers to build a new irrigation system that is still in place today.

  • In order to ensure that out Litre of Light Project was worth perusing we looked around the houses of Dunda to see if in fact the houses need lighting.

  • We found that many of the houses of Dunda were very dark inside and that the families would benefit from our project.
